2008 All-Stars News & Highlights

7/19/08

Paul Burgdorf sealed a state tournament and ATL playoff bid with a complete game shutout in an 11-0 win over the Lansingburgh Royals. Burgdorf was helped out by some big offensive outputs including homers from Dan Schoonmaker, Fred Estes and Eric Biehler who hit a titanic blast to cap off the days scoring. Burgdorf struck out nine and allowed just four hits.

 

7/16/08

Coming into the Wednesday night doubleheader All-Stars needed two wins against the Albany Senators to wrap up a state tournament berth and a #3 seed in the ATL playoffs. Matt Nash took the ball for All-Stars and would toss a complete game, allowing three runs while striking out five. Nick Ragone and Will Horan drove in All-Stars lone runs in the fourth inning with a single and sac fly. All-Stars loaded the bases in the seventh but struck out twice without plating a run to finish a 3-2 loss. In the nightcap Georgio Fuda made his first appearance of the summer in style. Fuda threw five innings without allowing a hit. Paul Burgdorf followed with a perfect inning and Nick Ragone gave up an infield single with two outs in the seventh to preserve a 10-1 victory. The scoring began in the top of the first with back to back to back RBI singles by Tim Hill, Horan and Ragone. Fernando Robleno would blow the game open in the fourth with a three-run triple. Leo Corvino chipped in with two doubles and an RBI.

 

7/15/08

All-Stars returned to ATL action with an epic battle against division leading Davies. After falling to a five run deficit after an error filled first inning All-Stars battled back. Virgil Chevalier drove in two runs with one of his four singles in the third to cut the lead to two. Dan Schoonmaker would give All-Stars the lead with one of his three doubles in the fourth, this one driving in two. Ultimately, Davies bats were too much and All-Stars fell in 9 innings 10-8. Ryan Ensel provided a gutsy complete game performance to help save the All-Stars bullpen for a busy week. Ensel struck out five.

 

7/11-7/13/08

All-Stars Academy continued its successful run of the annual Athletics Baseball Fest by finishing second in the eight team tournament. Some highlights of the tournament included a 9 for 13 weekend from first baseman Dan Schoonmaker. Virgil Chevalier had a four hit game that included a double and five RBIs. Fred Estes had three multi-hit games including a double and a three-run homer. Chris Schoepe and Matt Nash each tossed complete game shutouts for All-Stars two wins. Schoepe allowed five hits and struck out four while, Nash allowed three hits and struck out one.

 

7/9/08

Waterford salvaged the last of the 4-game series with All-Stars by defeating the Academy 5-2. The top of the All-Stars lineup collected seven of the team’s nine hits on the day but were unable to score until the seventh inning. Gary Miller had three singles, Fernando Robleno had two singles and Dan Schoonmaker had a single and double and drove in one of the two runs. Nick Ragone tossed two scoreless innings in relief. All-Stars took the season series with the Fordians 3-1.  

 

7/5/08

All-Stars and Davies faced off in a battle of division leaders on Saturday night. Hunter Moffatt took the mound for All-Stars and proceeded to strike out the first five batters he faced. In the fourth inning Moffatt allowed a walk, double, sacrifice fly and single before starting a double play to get out of the inning. Down 2-0 in the top of the fifth with Mike Williams on first base after singling, Eric Biehler hit a missile off the left center field wall. Williams tried scoring from first and despite a great slide attempt to avoid the tag, a perfect relay was able to get him at the plate. All-Stars threatened again in the sixth when Fred Estes’ double put men on second and third but they were unable to score and eventually lost 5-0. Moffatt took the loss, his first of the season, after allowing three earned runs, striking out five and walking one.

 

7/2/08

Division rivals Waterford played host to another Tholl battle on Wednesday night. Fernando Robleno led off the first with an infield single, followed by an infield single by Leo Corvino and a run scoring double by Dan Schoonmaker. Fred Estes then drove a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Corvino and an arrant throw brought home Schoonmaker to give All-Stars an early 3-0 lead. That would prove to be all Paul Burgdorf would need. Burgdorf finished his second complete game of the year striking out eight and yielding just two solo homers. Robleno later homered for All-Stars solidifying the 5-2 win.

 

6/30/08

Ryan Ensel threw his fifth complete game of the year to hold on to a 5-4 win over the Albany A’s. After the A’s took a quick 2 run lead in the first, Fred Estes put All-Stars back on top with a three-run opposite field homer. With the score knotted at 3 in the bottom of the sixth inning Tim Hill stepped to the plate with two outs and the bases full of All-Stars. Hill drove a pitch back up the box scoring Gary Miller and Leo Corvino. The A’s managed one run in seventh but Ensel struck out the four hitter with two on to seal the win.

 

6/28/08

Justin Brooks tossed a complete game no-hitter against the Lansingburgh Royals. Brooks struck out nine to throw the third no-no in the ATL in the last week. Dan Schoonmaker started the scoring in the first inning with a two-run shot to lead All-Stars to a 6-2 win. Leo Corvino also added an RBI single. In the nightcap, Matt Nash came in to retire one batter with the bases loaded in a 5-5 game in the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom half of the inning Schoonmaker led off with a double. Gary Miller sacrificed Schoonmaker to third and Fred Estes drove the second pitch he saw into the gap for a walk off 6-5 win over Dreyer Boyajian.

 

6/21/08

Ryan Ensel’s gutty performance extended All-Stars Academy’s lead in the Tholl Division over the Waterford Fordians. Ensel tossed a complete game and stranded runners in scoring position four times including a bases loaded jam in the sixth inning. Gary Miller shot All-Stars to an early lead with a two-run home in the top of the first. It was his second long ball on the season. Will Horan pushed the third run across on a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded. Fernando Robleno scored what proved to be the game winner when the second arrant throw on a pickoff attempt landed in the dugout. Robleno was awarded home base. Ensel struck out five and allowed three runs.

 

6/20/08

Hunter Moffatt improved his record to 3-0, tossing six strong innings in the nightcap of a doubleheader against the Troy Haymakers. Moffatt got some help when All-Stars jumped out to a five run lead in the bottom of the first inning behind RBI singles by Fernando Robleno and Tim Hill and a two-run double by Nick Ragone. Troy rallied for three runs in the top of the second but Dan Schoonmaker’s bases loaded, three-run double put the nail in the coffin. Moffatt allowed six hits and struck out eight. In game one All-Stars had trouble pushing runs across and despite collecting eight hits was shut out for the first time on the season.

 

6/17/08

Down 2-0 in the top of the third, Dan Schoonkmaker launched a three-run bomb over the wall in left center to give All-Stars all the offense it would need to defeat the Albany Athletics. Justin Brooks allowed two runs early but settled down and only allowed one hit after the first inning. After hitting the first batter in the sixth inning, Brooks handed the ball over to Ryan Ensel who got the next six outs for his first save as an All-Star. The two combined to allow three hits and strike out eight. Gary Miller and Leo Corvino each singled and scored a run. 

 

6/15/08

In a non-league game against the Tri-County Bees at Shuttleworth Park, All-Stars continued to pour on the offense, collecting 11 hits and scoring 13 runs. Leo Corvino had three hits including an RBI triple. Paul Burgdorf and Fred Estes added three RBIs a piece as Matt Nash, Chris Schoepe and Burgdorf combined to strike out 11 and walk just two over nine innings work. Nash picked up the victory striking out seven in five innings.

 

6/12/08

All-Stars picked up it’s seventh league victory of the season with a 12-7 defeat of Dreyer Boyajian. Leo Corvino got All-Stars out to an early lead with a first inning solo home run. He also scored in the third inning on a Gary Miller three-run bomb. Ryan Ensel took advantage of the scoring rush to take home his second victory of the season, allowing two runs over five innings of work. Dan Schoonmaker continued his hot hitting with two doubles and a solo homer, his third on the year.

 

6/8/08

Hunter Moffatt settled down after a rocky first inning to lead All-Stars to a 12-3 victory. Moffatt was helped by two grand slams. The first by Fernando Robleno in the bottom of the first and the second by Leo Corvino in the bottom of the third. The grand slam was Corvino’s second home run of the game and fifth on the season. It was followed when on the next pitch by Dan Schoonmaker hit a towering shot of his own.

 

6/7/08

Gary Miller got the Academy off to a quick lead with a 2-run double in the top of the first. But Lansingburgh was able to score in four of the next six innings, including three times in the fifth to beat All-Stars 6-3. Miller scored the only other run on a Tim Hill double down the right field line. Paul Burgdorf took the loss while striking out five in five innings of work.

 

6/3/08

Justin Brooks held the hottest hitting team in the league to just one run by striking out six in six innings of work. It was Brooks’ second win of the season. All-Stars broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning when Nick Ragone and Mike Williams hit consecutive bases loaded singles to score Gary Miller and Tim Hill. Paul Burgdorf shut the door with a perfect seventh inning to seal the victory.

 

6/1/08

Dreyer Boyajian scored on a walk off double in the bottom of the seventh to beat All-Stars 4-3. Leo Corvino continued to swing the hot bat by driving one ball over the wall in left center and then another over the wall in right center, his second and third homers in the last two games. Mike Williams drove in the third run for All-Stars who could not capitalize on a few base runners late in the game. Ryan Ensel took the loss on the mound.

 

5/29/08

All-Stars Academy flashed some of its offensive prowess with a 20-1 victory over the Royals. Ryan Ensel came a single away from the cycle, drove in four runs and scored three. Leo Corvino hit a grand slam in the fourth inning when All-Stars scored eight runs and sent 12 men to the plate. Two batters after Corvino, Dan Schoonmaker Drove a two-run homer into the left center gap. Will Horan also hit his first homer as an All-Star, a line drive over the right field wall. Hunter Moffatt picked up his first win of the season allowing no earned runs over five innings.

 

5/25/08

All-Stars suffered its first loss of the season Sunday night, dropping a  3-2 decision to Davies. Ryan Ensel tossed a complete game allowing only two earned runs, walked none and struck out two. Trailing 2-0 Justin Brooks and Fernando Robleno put down back to back bunts for base hits. After being sacrificed to second and third Gary Miller drove in the first run with a sac fly and Fred Estes brought in the tying run with a double over the left fielder’s head. Davies took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth inning and All-Stars was unable to push home the tying run in the seventh.

 

5/24/08

Nick Ragone put All-Stars on the scoreboard with a two-run double and later that inning Fernando Robleno put the finishing touches on the scoring with a three-run homer of his own. Paul Burgdorf picked up the victory allowing one run over five innings and striking out four. The win over the Senators put All-Stars in the lead in the Tholl division with a record of 3-0.

 

5/23/08

Justin Brooks threw two innings of relief to pick up his first ATL victory at Kelts Field on Friday night. Brooks followed Hunter Moffatt as the two combined for a two-hit shutout of Waterford. All-Stars broke up a 0-0 tie in the top of the seventh inning with a double by Will Horan, a sac bunt by Nick Ragone and another double by Ryan Ensel. Moffatt struck out 8 over 5 innings of work.

 

5/19/08

Ryan Ensel picked up where he left off in his 2007 Pitcher of the Year campaign by tossing a complete game three-hitter to get All-Stars Academy off to a 1-0 start. Ensel allowed two unearned runs while striking out seven. Newcomer Gary Miller started his All-Stars career with a two-run double in the top of the first inning. Miller followed with another double in the third and Dan Schoonmaker added an RBI single. Every All-Stars player collected at least one hit in the game.

 

 

6/22/07

This week’s ATL feature in the TU focused on the teaching aspect of the game. The

young players need someone to learn form and for the All-Stars Academy they get a lot

of their instruction from two former pros Virgil Chevalier and Mike Serbalik. Read more at
